“Impressions of …”
My artistic journey has been shaped by 30 years of living in different countries, spanning Western, Eastern Europe, and Asia. This life with a repeated pattern of migration, of uprooting the family and resettling in a new place, has profoundly influenced my perspective.
Turning up in foreign and unfamiliar places, I experienced at first hand how repeated exposure to the everyday environment, over time, transformed it into a place of familiarity with an eventual sense of “home”.
Working across mosaic, collage, ceramics, and photography, in this series, I create layered, detailed works that seek to give an “impression of place”. My process involves taking clay impressions of features in the urban and natural landscape, alongside macro photography, that capture the essence of place identity through colour, pattern and texture found in its everyday features.
The finished artworks evidence a direct connection to place, and attempt to archive a city's identity through touch. The works are not just inspired by a place, but are physically moulded from its features.
I find inspiration in how these seemingly mundane features can merge together to form a powerful sense of place. My work explores how these elements connect to the identity of a location, and can evoke recognition and identification with place.
